Giedrė Šlekytė, conductor

The Lithuanian conductor Giedrė Šlekytė, Prize winner of the renowned Malko Conducting Competition and internationally sought-after guest conductor, is a guest with the Stuttgart State Orchestra for the first time. Under her direction, two symphonic poems will be performed: Till Eulenspiegel’s Funny Pranks , in which Richard Strauss humorously summarizes the cheeky deeds of mischief from the late Middle Ages, and Antonín Dvořák’s The Wood Pigeon, which is based on a ballad by the Czech poet Karel Jaromír Erben. In between, the Norwegian Echo Klassik prizewinner Tine Thing Helseth interprets Mieczysław Weinberg’s trumpet concerto, which premiered in Moscow in 1968. Shifting between impulsive motor skills, intimate tenderness and abysmal tragedy, it is one of the most fascinating concerts for the instrument since Joseph Haydn and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The brilliant conclusion is the suite from Béla Bartók’s dance pantomime The Wonderful Mandarin , with which the Hungarian composer triggered a theater scandal at the Cologne Opera in 1926. Bartók set the brutal murder drama, which takes place in a desolate urban environment, to music with irrepressible musical energy and explosive dynamics.
